Where to Dance Salsa & Bachata in Los Angeles
Los Angeles is the birthplace of LA-style salsa On1 — the sharp, linear style invented by the Vazquez brothers in the 1990s and now danced worldwide. With nearly half the county identifying as Latino and 270+ weekly events, the scene sprawls across Hollywood, Alhambra, Downtown, and the South Bay, making it one of the largest Latin dance communities in the United States.

Hollywood
most-visited hub for visiting dancersEl Floridita on Vine Street has been running live salsa three nights a week for over 30 years — a genuine institution. La Descarga on North Western is the city's most atmospheric Latin nightclub: a Cuban rum bar with a strict dress code, live shows, and Salsa Tuesdays and Bachata Wednesdays that draw some of the best social dancers in the city.
El Floridita
📍 1253 Vine St, Los Angeles, CA 90038A Hollywood institution for over 30 years — Cuban supper club with live salsa bands and a proper dance floor. Celebrity sightings are common (Andy Garcia, Mario Lopez are regulars). Arrive before 8:30 PM to catch the free lesson before the live band. Reservations strongly recommended on Fri/Sat.
La Descarga
📍 1159 N Western Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90029The most celebrated Latin nightclub in LA — a Cuban rum bar disguised as a speakeasy, with live burlesque shows Thu–Sat. Dress code strictly enforced: collared shirts tucked in for men, cocktail attire for women; no sneakers or baseball caps. Reservations required Thu–Sat. The dance floor is intimate — the crowd is here to actually dance.
Alhambra
8 miles east of DTLA — the dedicated dance venue capitalThe San Gabriel Valley suburb of Alhambra is home to The Granada LA — the only venue in the region that functions as a full-time, purpose-built Latin dance destination with multiple floors, a dance school, restaurant, and late-night social. This is the venue most serious social dancers in LA call home.
The Granada LA
📍 17 S 1st St, Alhambra, CA 91801The closest thing LA has to a purpose-built congress venue — three floors, state-of-the-art sound and lighting, full restaurant. Classes at 9:30 PM on Thu and Fri are included in the cover. Second and fourth Fridays feature Bachatopia. Ample street parking nearby. A 20-minute drive east of Hollywood.
Downtown LA
gritty charm and late-night Latin energyDowntown LA hosts two contrasting Latin dance experiences. La Cita Bar on Hill Street is a dive-bar institution with cumbia and Latin music nights Thursday through Saturday — authentic, affordable, and packed. The Mayan Theatre (1927, pre-Columbian-style) reopened under new management in late 2025 after a closure; verify current schedule before visiting.
La Cita Bar
📍 336 S Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90013A beloved DTLA dive bar with a genuine Latin neighbourhood crowd — cumbia, salsa, and reggaeton, not a polished dance club. Thursday is Cumbia Fever night; Fridays and Saturdays get packed. No dress code, affordable drinks. 5-minute walk from Pershing Square Metro station.
⚠️ Closed September 2025 after 35 years, then reopened under new ownership in late 2025 — verify current programming before visiting. When operating: a spectacular 1927 pre-Columbian theatre with three floors; Latin (salsa, bachata) on the upper floor. Capacity up to 2,000 on big nights.
Tips for visitors
- 🚗LA requires a car — public transit won't get you between venues efficiently. Uber/Lyft are widely available. La Descarga and El Floridita in Hollywood are walkable from each other; The Granada in Alhambra is a 20-minute drive east.
- 🕙LA starts late. Most venues don't fill until 10 PM. La Descarga's dress code is strictly enforced — plan your outfit before you arrive (collared shirt tucked in for men, cocktail attire for women; no sneakers or hoodies).
- 💃LA-style salsa (On1) is the local default — sharp, linear, performance-influenced. If you dance On2 or Cuban, you'll find partners, but be ready to adapt. Bachata is widely popular and growing fast.
- 📅Best nights: Tuesdays (La Descarga Salsa), Fridays (The Granada — until 3 AM), Saturdays (La Descarga + The Granada both strong). Wednesday at La Descarga for bachata.
- 🎉LA hosts major bachata congresses each year — the LA Summer Bachata Festival (August) and Original LA Bachata Festival are the biggest. Book accommodation months in advance.
